The Houston Geological Society is taking action to improve outreach to the geoscience community.

Cheryl Desforges, HGS President-Elect, created the committee in September 2017 and the chairs of the Communication Committee are Rosemary Laidacker and Dianna Phu.

Cheryl says, “The Communications Committee was conceived and created in order to promote and expedite member involvement across HGS, as well as to reach out to the broader Houston area community. “

“Starting out, the function of the committee will be at least two-fold:
For internal HGS issues, it will provide a monthly forum where Committee chairs can announce to your leadership peers what your committee is doing, discuss coordination across multiple committees, bring up what HGS Members may have said about what they want, what the like, or what they dislike about HGS, and collaborate on solutions to issues.”

“For external contacts, it will provide a forum to discuss and brainstorm ways to improve general community awareness.  The HGS Communications Committee is charged with researching, developing, and implementing strategies to reach out to the general public in order promote awareness of HGS and geology, in general, as well as what geologists do and our contributions to modern life.  It will reach out to the local press, including newspapers, radio and television, in order to establish a relationship, so they will become our partners in disseminating information to the general public.  It is hoped that this enhanced visibility of HGS will also attract more eligible members to our Society.”
