Hunstem Resources

HUNSTEM was started in October of 2004 utilizing a major grant from the U.S. Army Research Office. The name and purpose for HUNSTEM was developed by the Principal Investigator for this project, Dr. Larry Spears, Professor of Chemistry at UHD. Professor Spears has been actively promoting STEM activities in the Houston community for many years, including serving as the Executive Director of the Science Engineering Fair of Houston since 1985.

HUNSTEM brings a wealth of resources together through an interactive gateway that is extensive, user-friendly, and quality controlled via the integration of national (NCTM,2000; NRC, 1996), state(TEKS), and local mathematics and science standards. HUNSTEM is a learning community that includes schools, informal science institutions, professional societies, and institutes of higher learning in the Houston area.

Houston Museum of Natural Science

HGS has always had a strong relationship with the Houston Museum of Natural Science, formerly with a Special Advisor, and now with the liaison committee that initiates ways to involve our membership in volunteer efforts at the Museum and provide geosciences advice to the Museum where appropriate. Traditionally, we try to have a function each year at the Museum, in order to better involve our general membership.

  • But there are plenty of other benefits for HMNS volunteers, too!
  • Free admission to any Museum venue (including the Wortham IMAX® Theatre, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the Burke Baker Planetarium) while wearing your volunteer badge.
  • Two free Museum passes for every 40 hours of service.
  • Free parking in the HMNS Parking Garage whenever you volunteer.
  • Information on upcoming training programs, special events and volunteer activities through our volunteer newsletter, The Dashing Diplodocus.
  • Invitations to dinners, coffees, field trips, and other activities throughout the year.
  • Training from curators and other Museum experts.
  • A Volunteer badge upon completion of 12 hours of service.
  • 10 percent discount in the HMNS Gift Shops during your first year; 25 percent discount after one year and 40 hours of service, and additional employee discount days.

Any docent who has seen a child's face light up as they grasp a T. rex tooth or touch a foot long giraffe vertebra for the first time will tell you - sharing your passion for science is the greatest reward!
