Presentation Title: Sustainable Data Center Siting: Using CCUS and
Shallow Geothermal to Lower Carbon Emissions and Water Demand
Abstract: As demand for AI and cloud computing infrastructure
accelerates across the United States, developers, energy providers, and
technology companies are seeking reliable energy and water solutions to
support large-scale data center deployment while aligning with ESG
objectives and operating within increasingly resource-constrained
environments.
Modern hyperscale data centers require continuous power at scales
ranging from hundreds of megawatts to gigawatts, with many still reliant
on fossil fuel-based generation such as natural gas and coal. This
dependence creates growing climate and regulatory pressure as companies
pursue net-zero targets, positioning CCUS as a viable pathway to reduce
emissions while maintaining reliability. Cooling infrastructure are also
a major driver of energy and water demand, highlighting the importance
of water stewardship. Shallow geothermal cooling offers a promising
alternative by reducing reliance on evaporative systems, lowering both
energy consumption and water use.
Together, these strategies provide a pathway to support continued data
center growth while improving sustainability, resilience, and resource
efficiency.
Presenter: Danny Kingham, PG, GSI Environmental Inc., Houston, Texas
Presenter Bio: Ms. Danny Kingham is a Principal Hydrogeologist at GSI
Environmental Inc. and a licensed Professional Geoscientist in Texas,
Louisiana, and New York. She serves on the Texas Board of Professional
Geoscientists and the Texas A&M Geology and Geophysics Department
Advisory Committee, and contributes as a Subject Matter Expert to the
ASBOG Council of Examiners. With 20+ years of experience, Ms. Kingham
specializes in environmental permitting and compliance, site
investigation, and litigation support with a particular focus on energy
transition sectors such as carbon capture and storage, shallow
geothermal, and critical mineral resource development. Her project
experience spans oil and gas facilities, data centers, commercial and
industrial manufacturing plants, and carbon sequestration sites. Ms.
Kingham is experienced in UIC Class I, II, and VI injection well
projects, encompassing site screening and selection, permitting,
