Volunteers Needed for Reach for the Stars STEM Festival

The HGS educational outreach group is preparing for the upcoming Reach for the Stars Festival for middle school girls at Rice University on Saturday April 9, 2022.  VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!

The HGS has had a booth there since it started in 2006 as the Sally Ride Festival for Young Girls, except for 2021 when we skipped due to covid. The organizer at Rice University has been informed that the HGS will have a booth this year and the official form has been sent and will be updated when we get the names of all the volunteers.

This year the 200 students will be divided into 4 groups and there will be 4 time slots with 4 activities - the exhibits, a job panel. and 2 workshops. This means that the HGS booth needs to be staffed from 10 until 3:30. All the students will roam the entire booth exhibit, but at different times. The time slots are about 10, 11, 1:30 and 2:30, with lunch and a speaker from 12-1:30. HGS booth volunteers can sign up for the whole day or for morning or for afternoon.  Volunteer were requested for a job panel discussion - the HGS has one volunteer panelist signed up, but can use back-up - or perhaps have 2 on the panel. There are also openings for hands-on workshops if anyone can do that.

If you’d like to volunteer please email jmcombes@msn.com with activity preferred and time slot.  Booth volunteers are the most needed, but let me know if you are interested in being on a jobs panel or hosting a workshop. The official website https://space.rice.edu/ReachForTheStars/ has the latest info plus a video summary from last year.
