Scholarship: A Lifetime of Learning

Winter winds are blowing prices higher, worldwide. As of this writing, WTI is near $90, Brent is approaching $95 and Natural Gas is nearly $5.50 per MCF. Geopolitical tensions, massive winter hedging and a ‘Backwardated” price curve (future year prices lower on Commodity trading forecasts) all combine to max out price volatility. And that’s not even pricing in any actual military action in Eastern Europe… so here’s hoping cooler heads prevail.

So, what do these turbulent times have to do with Scholarship? Plenty, as it turns out. To take honorable advantage of these rapidly transitioning times, HGS Members in-the-know realize that the ‘Lifetime Learning’ process always pays benefits, regardless of one’s youth or seniority.

To keep our geoscience exploration skillsets at their best, we can all benefit from a review of techniques more widely used in the recent past; now applied in a current-day business model. Long time HGS Member and Author Dr. Marc Helsinger continues with his second installment of applying Sequence Stratigraphic Integration to increase the Probability of Success and Risk Reduction of drilling large, untested prospects onshore in the Gulf Coast (equally applicable worldwide). Stay tuned for his third installment next month in the March 2022 HGS Bulletin... with hopefully a new series following after!

HGS Core Values and Mission Statements aren’t just dusty words on a stone (or digital) tablet…they are alive and underway every day in the HGS. Educational Outreach for K-12, College and University support and HGS Continuing Education are all the Heartbeat of HGS.

To celebrate that Spirit and Commitment, the HGS Scholarship Night will be an IN-Person event at the Norris Center next Monday Night, February 7, 2022. There will be a great panel discussion with renowned Moderators Charles Sternbach and former HGS Editor Fang Lin interviewing five successful Young Professional HGS Geoscientists sharing their experiences and future plans, in an exciting evening, culminating in the awards of HGS Undergraduate and Calvert Memorial Scholarships. See the HG Website and Calendar for more information, Moderators’ and Speakers’ Bios and Schedule of Events. Attendees will be emailed a certificate of continuing education for 1 professional development credit hour after the event. Sign up early and safely Social Distance with your HGS colleagues; this event is nearly SOLD OUT, so don’t delay!
