Petroleum Geoscience:
Basics of Petroleum
Generation

Tuesday, May 3 and Wednesday, May 4, 2005
9:00 am – 4:00 p.m.
Ellison Miles Geotechnology Institute
Brookhaven College, Farmers Branch, Dallas, Texas

Cost of 2-day Short Course: $190, SEATING LIMITED TO 50

Petroleum (oil and natural gas) is the basic source of energy to maintain our civilization. The rich countries need it to sustain their lifestyle, whereas the poor countries need it to improve their lot. Although economic deposits of petroleum are found in many parts of the world, almost two-thirds of the world’s oil is located in the Middle East. This uneven distribution makes petroleum a highly prized natural resource, which has dominated world economy and politics for almost one hundred years.

The course covers the geology of petroleum from basics to the sophisticated fundamentals. The lecturers cover the history of the petroleum industry, drilling, depositional environments, geochemistry, reservoir, properties of seals and reservoirs, seismic analysis, and risk and business concepts. Searching and drilling for oil is a highly technical endeavor, yet oil and gas exploration is almost an “art”. This course explains the techniques for evaluating whether a basin is favorable for oil and gas accumulations in jargon-free terms. Basics of oil and gas leasing, evaluating oil and gas deposits and how to evaluate oil company financials are also covered.
