Course Description: Learn to recognize a hydrocarbon anomaly (the prospect) and then to validate its structure and composition. Topics covered are: 1) rock properties 2) elastic properties (p-wave, s-wave velocities and density) 3) stack and pre-stack seismic amplitudes 4) recognizing hydrocarbon signatures in different depositional environments 5) predicting seismic responses from wet and hydrocarbon saturated intervals as recorded on conventional well logs 6) sensitivity of various seismic amplitude attributes to Class 1,2 and 3 AVO anomalies, and 7) numerous case-history examples of Class 1, 2 and 3 AVO environments that illustrate amplitude interpretation rules and also introduce new interpretation concepts.
