 troleum Geology as a Science and Industry &ndash\;
  Past\, Present\, Future(?)\n \n In this talk\, we
  will look at the ups and downs of the Petroleum I
 ndustry. \n \n We will start our journey in the la
 te seventies (when we thought the world was runnin
 g out of oil and inflation-corrected WTI price-per
 -barrel was about $150).\n \n We will arrive at th
 e present-day (when we think we have more than eno
 ugh oil and gas reserves to see us through the ene
 rgy transition\, with price-per-barrel around the 
 $60 mark)\, and consider some thought-provoking sc
 enarios for the future.\n \n The focus will be on 
 integrating the world&rsquo\;s geopolitical settin
 g with technological developments and the addition
  of significant resources through exploration. Fir
 st through the application of 3D seismic in establ
 ished provinces\, the advent of deep-water drillin
 g in the 90ies\, the opening of subtle (stratigrap
 hic) play trends and finally through the rise of u
 nconventional resources.\n \n We will also look at
  how hiring &amp\; firing cycles influence researc
 h\, university enrollment and staff demographics t
 o arrive at the present-day state of our demograph
 ics globally.\n \n This talk provides the perspect
 ive of a single individual\, and therefore is just
  that! It should make for an entertaining\, though
 t-provoking and perhaps educational experience.\n 
 \n &nbsp\;\n \n Bio\n \n Dr. Rene Jonk\n \n \n \n 
 Rene is the director of ACT-Geo\, a company that s
 pecializes in subsurface consulting and training. 
 He also holds an honorary professorship in Geology
  &amp\; Geophysics at the School of Geosciences at
  the University of Aberdeen.\n \n Rene has more th
 an 20 years&rsquo\; experience in global surface a
 nd subsurface basin characterisation with a focus 
 on oil &amp\; gas exploration and production\, hav
 ing worked in both technical and leadership roles 
 at ExxonMobil and Apache.\n \n He has worked acros
 s the full upstream cycle\, from exploration\, thr
 ough appraisal into field development on conventio
 nal and unconventional assets from onshore to deep
 -water settings.\n \n He currently applies his sub
 surface problem-solving skills across the energy s
 pectrum.\n \n &nbsp\;\n \n
