DESCRIPTION:HGS General Social Meeting for May 2025\n \n Date: May 12\, 2025\n \n NEW LOCATION AND PRICES!\n \n Place: Spanish Flowers\, 4701 N Main St.\, Houston \, TX 77009\n \n Time: 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm \;\n \n Price includes drinks and appetizers. \;&n bsp\;\n \n Presentation: The Challenges of an Oil Historian in the 21st Century\n \n Speaker: Jeff S pencer\n \n \n \n Industry practices of the late 1 9th and early 20th centuries were very different f rom the practices of today.  \;Photographs of early oil gushers\, earthen storage tanks\, and oi l field fires are abundant and cannot be ignored w hen presenting petroleum industry history\, but th ey need to be placed in their historical context.  \; The &ldquo\;shooting of a well&rdquo\; was successful if it resulted in an oil gushing over the top of a derrick.  \;Early tourists would take weekend train excursions to picnic in view of a lit &ldquo\;gasser.&rdquo\;  \; Early petro leum-related photographs were sold as stereoviews and cabinet cards.  \;These were replaced with postcards.  \;The early 1900s saw a craze in sending and collecting postcards. Postcard views o f these early oil gushers\, gassers\, and fires we re purchased and mailed throughout the world.
