Article Submissions

A Note to Authors

Authors are invited to submit articles ("papers") for publication in either the HGS Bulletin, here on the HGS web page, or both. All Bulletin articles must be reviewed and approved by the editor of the HGS Bulletin. All HGS Web site publications must be reviewed and approved by the HGS Web manager.

Guidelines for HGS Bulletin Authors

Submissions are due to Editor the 15th of the month, 6 weeks before publication
Abstracts should be 500 words or less; extended abstracts up to 1000 words; articles can be any length but brevity is preferred as we have a physical page limit within our current publishing contract. All submissions are subject to editorial review and revision. “Free” Ads for short courses, events, etc. should be formatted to be usable at either a full or half page.
Text should be submitted by email as an attached text or WORD file or on a clearly labeled diskette in WORD format with a hard copy printout.
Figures, maps, diagrams, etc. should be digital files using Adobe Illustrator, Freehand, or Canvas. CorelDraw and Canvas files should be saved in Adobe Illustrator (.eps) format. Send them as separate attachments or files on a diskette, DO NOT embed them into the document as we must strip them out and this causes many problems.
DO NOT USE POWERPOINT, CLIPART and Internet images (72 DPI resolution)-These DO NOT have adequate resolution for the printed page and cannot be accepted. We must have digital files 320 DPI or better resolution. PLEASE insure your authors check this and send us correct resolution to start with.
Photographs may be digital (320 DPI or greater) or hard copy, printed on glossy paper with the Author’s name, photo number and caption on the back..
Send material to the bulletin_editor@hgs.org address but then check back to make sure it got through (no bounce back message), as the hgs server has been known to go down for days at a time. Send material to my own email as a last resort ( wherlich@pdq.net ).

Technical abstracts, featured papers and articles

The Bulletin publishes abstracts and extended abstracts for technical talks presented at the monthly meetings of the Houston Geological Society, longer featured technical papers, and articles of interest to our members. Abstracts should be 500 words or less, extended abstracts 500-1000 words, and feature articles up to 2500 words. Letters to the editor and informational articles can be of any length although brevity is preferred. All submissions may be edited.

Illustrations

Photographs should be printed on glossy paper and labeled on the back by author's name, photo number (referenced in your text) and caption. Black and white photos are preferred, although color prints may be used. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for photo return.

Maps, diagrams and line drawings should be digital files produced using a graphics program such as Adobe Illustrator, Freehand, or Canvas. CorelDraw and Canvas files should be saved in Adobe Illustrator (.eps) format. Your illustrations should be designed with the size of the printed page in mind; be sure your text is legible and the illustration is not too crowded to be easily understood.

Powerpoint files, clip-art and Internet images (72 dpi resolution) do not have adequate resolution for the printed page and cannot be accepted! Do not embed illustrations in the body of your text, please send as separate graphic files.

How and where to submit your article

Submit your article (a) in the body of an email (preferred), or (b) by email as an attached text, RFT or Word file, or (c) on a clearly labeled diskette in text or Word format, with a hard copy printout. Submissions must be received by the 15th of the month, six weeks before the publication date (i.e. Oct. 15th for publication in the December Bulletin).

HGS Web site articles:

If you are familiar with HTML, please "mark up" the text before submitting it for use on the web page. Otherwise, as time permits, volunteers will convert your text for the web site. Illustrations are acceptable in either location but please submit pictures appropriate for the medium intended. Web-site illustrations should be easily read on low resolution screens and take a minimum of storage space; GIF format is preferred

Another way to publish HGS Web site articles with minimum effort is for authors to provide "web-ready" copy on their own web site and ask us to point to it.

We reserve to right to decide on the type and mix of "papers" that we publish as well as their duration of stay on our web site. Authors may ask for their removal at any time.
