HGS Publications Ordering Information

In 2001, the HGS, other member societies of the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies (GCAGS), and the Bureau of Economic Geology (the Bureau) signed agreements enabling the Bureau to sell and distribute geological society publications formerly handled by Earth Enterprises, Inc.

Many, but not all, of our publications have now been transferred to the Bureau’s facilities in Austin, Texas. A list of all geological society publications available from the Bureau will soon be posted on the Bureau’s Website at; www.beg.utexas.edu/mainweb/pubs01.htm

Legends in Wildcatting . . . a great successes in 2000 and 2003!

The January, 2000 Legends in Wildcatting round-table event was a great success. HGS President Charles Sternbach described it as " the largest HGS dinner in the last decade", with registration cut off at 450 people.

After presentation of the undergraduate student awards, Gene Gibson, grandson of one of the original Spindletop drillers, was introduced. The main event was a lively presentation of the philosophies and stories of the five Legends panelists, Marlan Downey, Gene Van Dyke, George Mitchell, Joe Foster, and John Seitz . A question and answer session elicited some interesting questions about the future, and a few witty exchanges regarding differing exploration philosophies between the panelists.

The HGS created a video of the event, with seed money from the AAPG Foundation, which promotes education about the oil industry, and a $1,000 grant from Phillips Petroleum Company. The videos are now available and can be ordered using this form

In 2003, a second Legends Night was held. Videos from this special event are available for $19, plus $4 shipping/handling.
