Houston Energy Council
Update September, 1999
by Sandi Barber
Representatives of the following societies have met several times to form the Houston Energy Council and to
define its mission:
- Geophysical Society of Houston (GSH)
- Houston Area Petroleum Landmen (HAPL)
- Houston Geological Society (HGS)
- Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists (SIPES), Houston Chapter
- Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Gulf Coast
- Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers (SPEE), Houston Chapter
- Society of Petroleum Well Logging Analysts (SPWLA), Gulf Coast
The HEC mission is to benefit the members of the associated professional societies related to the upstream
petroleum industry by
- Sharing information
- Promoting cross-disciplinary education and networking
- Encouraging participation in each other's technical, social and outreach programs
- Recommending and facilitating development of cooperative programs that further benefit the members of
participating societies
Several joint activities and products have been recommended by the Council for approval by the individual
societies. The two most recommended are a Global Climate Change Forum in 2000 and a central web site
calendar, listing events for all HEC member societies. Other efforts include cross-disciplinary courses, such
as a course on buying and selling production, to be coordinated by SPEE.
