Event Description

     ===========================================
                                   Late-Breaking News!
     ===========================================

We are pleased to announce a special addition to the program.  Dr. Kiran S. Misra, Consultant to the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, India , will attend and speak on "Cretaceous Volcanism, Geological Development and Exploration of Mesozoic and Tertiary Hydrocarbon Pools in and around Peninsular India." Based on his extensive experience, Dr. Misra will present some new ideas of oil and gas potential associated with the Deccan Traps.

Misra and Danforth will divide the presentation time equally between their respective topics, so we still plan to conclude the program at or near the usual time.

  India - Historical and Emerging Plays, Identifying New Petroleum Systems Using Regional PSDM Seismic Data

Al Danforth
Independent Geological Consultant
Houston, TX

The history of oil and gas discoveries in India dates back to 1867 in the Assam Basin onshore and to the 1974 discovery offshore of the giant Bombay (Mumbai) High field off the west coast. Earliest east coast discoveries were in the K-G (Krishna-Godavari) Basin near the coast in 1979-80, expanding into the offshore in the 1990’s. Since then, gas was found along the east coast in a few fields in the Mahanadi basin (2003) but the big east-coast gas reserves emerged in the new offshore K-G fields, which have grown to over 30 TCFG and promise a sorely needed source to fuel India’s rapidly growing energy demands. Most recently, discoveries in the Cretaceous beneath the K-G Tertiary gas fields, in the deep water of the Cauvery Basin and on the West Coast in the Kutch Basin suggest additional new potential.

Two examples will be presented that have greatly increased India’s exploration potential. The first, on the east coast, is the 85E Ridge, previously thought to be a hot spot track, and now interpreted to be a continental fragment supporting a very large (50 x 100 km) carbonate platform, underlain by potential Jurassic through Cretaceous source rocks. The second example is a large deep (15-20 km) coastal graben that likely contains Albo-Aptian source rocks in the active oil generation window, beneath the Deccan Traps on the west coast.

Understanding the new play ideas calls on data from India’s conjugate margins in Africa and Antarctica, and analogs of how continental margins of India formed during the breakup of Gondwana. This presentation provides an overview of the historic producing provinces of India and examples of recent emerging plays together with some new play ideas for India’s offshore areas based on results of a campaign of regional PSDM seismic acquired in 2006-2007 by ION-GX Technology.

SMT, the market leader for Windows-based geoscientific interpretation, allows the geoscientist to focus on the analysis, not on managing the tools. Customers can install KINGDOM and interpret data -- the same day. Spanning 85 nations, the SMT installed base, gives clients access to user groups all around the world. With performance proven to scale for large data sets, KINGDOM will help your organization find oil and gas faster. www.seismicmicro.com

ION is a leading provider of geophysical technology, services, and solutions for the global oil & gas industry.  ION's offerings allow E&P operators to obtain higher resolution images of the subsurface to reduce the risk of exploration and reservoir development, and enable seismic contractors to acquire geophysical data more efficiently.  Additional information about ION is available at http://www.iongeo.com/

Headwave is a geophysical software company providing 3D visualization and interaction with prestack and other multi-dimensional seismic datasets.   By utilizing data compression and harnessing the rapidly increasing power of modern graphics cards, Headwave gives users easy interaction with potentially enormous (TB+) prestack datasets from single PCs or notebooks. With workflows for both data processors and interpreters see how Headwave is changing the way geoscientists look at seismic data at www.headwave.com, and for more information about the Headwave plugin for Petrel.
