Earth Science Week -
Public Field Trip:
High Island, TX Saturday, October 18, 2008 10:00am-3:00pm
Visit our site any time between 10 and 3 to learn about salt domes, oil, beach processes, and ice age fossils.
Where: Come to the beach where Hwy 87 and Hwy 124 intersect, just south of the town of High Island, and east of Galveston. Park on the pavement and look for my Red Honda CR-V with a sign on it saying "Earth Science Week".
What to See: We will discuss how High Island got to be 50 feet above everything else and look at a seismic line showing the salt dome pushing it up. That uplift process also makes this beach one of the best places to find ice age fossils and I will show you what to look for. If you are extremely lucky, you might even find an Indian Clovis point.
Shelling: The McFadden beach in the wildlife preserve is an excellent place to look for shells.
Birders: This is a great place to bird watch and we will have an expert to help. Bring binoculars if you have them.
Fossiling: Our location is 50 feet off the road. The best fossils are found more than a mile down the beach.
Children welcome when accompanied by parent.
Dress: Dress for the beach. Bring water. There are NO facilities on the beach.
Volunteers: Contact Neal Immega or Martha McRae at esw@hgs.org
Field Trip leader is Neal Immega. No reservations required. For more information please contact Neal at esw@hgs.org.
