HGS Annual Guest Night - May 22, 2010 - Speaker Announced

The 2010 HGS Guest Night speaker will be the renowned Dr. Patricia Wood Dickerson, The Geological Institute and Visiting Research Fellow, Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin. Presentation Title: "Big Bend - Where the Rockies Meet the Appalachians - Discoveries and Enigmas". On-line registration opens April 1, 2010

Where - Finnigan Park and Evergreen Negro Cemetery
When - Saturday, April 2nd  from 8:00 am - noon
What - 

Finnigan Park: Do light landscaping and fill in the cement planters with colored plants
           
Evergreen Negro Cemetery: Dig fence posts for installation of a new fence, fill the back of the cemetery with sand, cut down and remove trees, mow and edge cemetery lots, document the graves and their positions, Identify and mark headstones that are below the surface, clean headstones, and take a rubbings.

This is very important work for the site to be recognized as a Historical Site.

Where to park - Right across the street from the Evergreen Negro Cemetery is a restaurant that is closed.  You can use that parking lot.  Or park at Finnigan Park at 4900 Providence Street.

What to bring - Details will be made available. Keep Houston Beautiful will provide equipment, HGS members can bring their own equipment with them, such as weed eaters, etc.

Free T-Shirts - New HGS T-shirts will be provided at the event. ConocoPhillips will provide meals for volunteers. Please advise Joan or Lilly at the HGS office of your planned attendance so we can get an accurate head count.
