Details for "PTTC Source Rocks 101"

This course will cover how oil and gas are generated, critical variables in assessing source rock quality, measuring total organic carbon content (TOC), source rock quality and organic matter type, thermal maturity, predicting volumes, types and timing of hydrocarbon generation, models for source rock deposition, and the appropriate use of more sophisticated geochemical analyses.

Agenda
1) Introduction
2) Organic matter, kerogen and where hydrocarbons come from
3) Measuring TOC
4) Evaluating source rock quality
5) Thermal maturity
6) Generation of hydrocarbons and cracking kinetics
7) Source rock models
8) When more sophisticated analyses are appropriateTEST

Speaker Dr. Nicholas Harris

Nick Harris is Research Associate Professor in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He previously held a similar position at the Pennsylvania State University and worked as a research scientist and exploration geologist for 14 years at Conoco Inc. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Nick's interests focus on the application of sedimentology, geochemistry and basin modeling to problems in petroleum geology. He has had a long-standing interest in hydrocarbon source rocks and worked for many years on lacustrine source rocks in the west African rift basins. He and his students are now engaged in a multidisciplinary study of source rocks and tight gas sandstones, including the Woodford Shale in west Texas.
