May 2003 News |
From Your President, Jan Stevenson
This time last year it was with excitement and yes, I’ll admit, with some trepidation as well, I began my tenure as President. It has been a wonderful year and we’ll be closing with our Annual Meeting on May 22, 2003 as a new slate of officers will be introduced. Our program, “International Extravaganza,” will include members of HGA modeling fashions brought back from living or traveling in foreign countries, a performance of international dancers, and a buffet luncheon. This event will be held at the Houston Racquet Club and chaired by Sara Nan Grubb, Delores Humphrey, and Hellen Hutchison.
What has made our year flow so easily, has been the dedication, cooperation, and hard work of our Board members and members of our committees. I sincerely thank all of you.
Special thanks go to the following:
Sandra Pezzetta - our First Vice President, for her creative planning of our parties.
Winona LaBrant Smith - for her impeccable reporting of our minutes.
Linnie Edwards - for collecting dues and working to increase our membership, hosting a Board meeting in her home, and assisting with SOS.
Janet Steinmetz - for keeping us well informed on our finances.
Gwinn Lewis - for all her time spent putting our Yearbook together and being so generous opening her home to us for the April Board meeting and tea.
Kathryn Bennett and Jan Eads - for getting our Eclectic Logs to us.
Jeanne Cooley and Beverly Van Siclen - for sending out cards to members who were ill or suffered the loss of a loved one and also providing us with name tags.
Edie Frick - for helping cover our news in the HGS Bulletin.
Pat Hefner - for putting out the Eclectic Log and doing a bang-up professional job.
Pat Burkman - our Historian and Photographer, who made us laugh while recording all our “doings.”
Millie Tonn - for never seeming to get tired of all my questions, serving as Parliamentarian and helping out at SOS.
Daisy Wood - for her indefatigable work on Game Day, one of our more popular events.
Our Directors - Edie Bishop, Mildred Davis, Mary Harle, and Millie Tonn.
Please extend Betty Alfred, my successor, all the support each and every one of you gave to me. I have no doubt that the HGA will continue to be a source of fun, support, and camaraderie. Our membership drive is ongoing so please work on its expansion.
It has truly been an honor to serve as your President and I will treasure the memory.

GeoWives
On March 13, 2003, the Geo-Wives will travel to Huntsville to see the much larger than life statue of the General/ Senator/President and the Sam Houston Memorial Museum Complex. The museum includes his Woodland Home and law office on their original sites and his Steamboat Home, where he died. There will be lunch on the Square, and, of course, we hope to have time to shop. Our thanks are extended to Linnie Edwards and Martha Lou Broussard for planning this day.
HGA
by Jan Stevenson, President Our annual Game Day was held at the Junior League on February 24, 2003. It was another successful event headed by Daisy Wood. Bridge, bunco, and chickenfoot dominoes were enjoyed, Sara Nan Grubb presented us with an informal showing of rodeo fashions, and many prizes were bestowed. Attendees were instructed to “GO TEXAN” and did they ever! Last, but surely not least was the delicious buffet we were provided.
A reminder about our March event-“Beauty By Bus-A Guided Tour of Houston’s Fine Arts” with lunch at Patrenella’s. This event will take place on March 18, 2003. Members will be getting further details by mail. If any nonmember would like to join us, contact Linnie Edwards 713-785-7115 or Mary Harle at 713-782-7864.
Our membership drive is ongoing so if any HGS spouse is interested in joining our auxiliary, please contact Linnie Edwards, Membership Chairman.
Our first party of the year took place at the Lakeside Country Club. For this exhilarating event, “ The Victorian Lady Fashion Show,” we need to thank chairpersons Lois Matuszak and Dene Grove. They did a fantastic job of coordinating activities leading up to the raffle of a Victorian doll and exciting door prizes. The HGA wishes to thank Transaction In Oil & Gas and Victoria’s Secret for donating the lovely door prizes.
The December Holiday program is scheduled for Thursday, December 5, 2002. Guest and HGA members are invited to the Brae’Burn Country Club to enjoy a Holiday Music Program to be given by The Joyful Noise with choir director Sally Lowrey. Following lunch, Beverly Smolenski will entertain us at the piano. The chairpersons for this event are Gwinn Lewis and Katherine Bennett. This should be a great time to meet friends and enjoy the gaiety of the Holiday Season.

Jan Stevenson, HGA President
By the time you read this we have already been transported to the nineteenth century at our first event of the new season. At Lakeside Country Club on September 10, J’Nean and Kim of “The Victorian Lady” presented us with a parade of Victorian clothing and hats from 1854 to 1912 along with a demonstration of the customs and etiquette practiced by ladies of that era. Members and guests enjoyed a bountiful buffet as well.
We welcome our new members Sally Blackhall, Arlene Falchook, Frances H. Scherer, Geralyn Smitherman, Denise Stone (HGS President), Betty Sullivan, and Elizabeth Wilson. We urge the spouse of any HGS member to become a part of the Auxiliary. Those interested, please call Linnie Edwards, Membership Chairman, at 713-785-7115 for information.
Linnie Edwards, Edie Frick, and Dene Grove were pleased to help out the HGS with registration at the TechnoFest at the Westchase Hilton on August 8, 2002.
Please circle this date, December 5, because you won’t want to miss our Holiday Luncheon at Brae Burn Country Club, where we will be entertained by the Joyful Noise Choral Group led by Sally Lowrey, followed by Beverly Smolenski at the piano.
It is an honor and my pleasure to be serving as President of the HGA for the coming year. We have a great board and expect a productive and fun-filled year.
Please fill out a membership form as soon as possible as our directory deadline is July 15, 2002. Invite a new member or two to join us and share the lovely times we will have.
We look forward to your participation in the year to come.
Jan Stevenson

From Your President - Millie Tonn
Our year has been terrific one, yet it is rapidly drawing to a close. But before we bid it farewell, we will have one last bash. Our Annual Meeting scheduled for May 7, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., will include an informal style show and luncheon at the Racquet Club. There will be models from the HGA and musical entertainment by one of our own members-Laima Gaizutis. Chairing this event will be Sara Nan Grubb, with the able assistance of Margaret Jones and members of their committee. Also included is the business meeting when new officers for the upcoming year are announced and introduced.
One more time-Membership! We need to expand our membership. Let’s all work on bringing this about in the coming year.
What has helped make our year go so well has been the talents, hard work, and contributions of our Officers, Board members and members of our various committees. Special thanks go out to the following:
And special thanks go to all the others who were not listed, but helped with our activities.
I should like to conclude on a personal note: with the ending of my tenure as HGA President for 2001-2002, I want to express my deepest appreciation for having been given the opportunity to hold this position. I thoroughly enjoyed the year and it was one of my best times. I am truly thankful to all of you-the members, fellow officers and board members for the support and cooperation I was given. It made my job a memorable and wonderfully enriching experience. And although time marches on, friendships and memories are lasting and enduring.
My sucessor as President, Jan Stevenson. I am sure she will do a fantastic job for you and I know you, will lend her your support as you did for me.
My sincerest thanks again for making my year so pleasant and memorable

HEAR YE, HEAR YE, Houston has a stake in the Olympics taking place in, Australia. We are being represented by one of our very own TORREY FOLK, daughter of Dr. William Folk and Martha Murphy Folk, of Houston, and granddaughter of Stewart H. Folk of the HGS and our popular Mary Boyd Folk, a past president of the Houston Geological Auxiliary. Torrey began rowing as a hobby when she first attended Rice University, transferred to Wisconsin at the suggestion of the Olympic Coach at Rice, who recognized her tremendous potential as a rower, was chosen for the Olympic Team and was at the opening ceremony in Australia the end of September. The USA is fixing its sights on the powerful Romanian team and this is a quote from Torrey herself: "We have been bridesmaids to the Romanians long enough", implying, of course, that the US would be striving to take that coveted position at the altar!
We decided to get an early start on the Holiday Season and have our Holiday Party in November so that we wouldn't miss any December parties. So, HGA's social season is shifting into high gear and we suggest you get your reservations in early for Tuesday, November 14, for this Holiday Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Lakeside Country Club on Wilcrest. Talented Sara Nan Grubb is chairing this event, which will feature the latest designs offered by Draper's and Damon's in Town and Country. As an added attraction the models will be our own glamorous members! One of these, Mae Barclay, will be doing double duty: not only will she be a mannequin but she will design the invitations and some of her own fashion drawings and art-work will be part of the decor. Lucky HGA to have this pro as one of its own! Mae has a degree in fine arts from LSU and her sensitive paintings, sculptures, designs and newspaper and magazine illustrations have charmed Houstonians for years. She also writes poetry! Aren't you glad she belongs to US! (So, hey, go mark your calendars!!!)
Have you always wanted to be in a mystery play? Well there will be an audition casting call for seven men and four women to be actors in the play "Toward Zero" by Agatha Christie on November 20, 2000. Intense rehearsals will begin January 1, 2001 and the play will be performed at the Kaplan Theatre, Jewish Community Center at 5601 South Braeswood at a matinee on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, March 10, 2001, at 7 p.m. If you are interested call Lois Matuszak at 281-392-3702.

We gathered at River Oaks Country Club and caught up on the news of friends, vacations and happenings. The theme of the day was "Everythings Coming Up Roses". The club was decorated with silk roses of pink, yellow, and burgundy which added a festive glow to the room and added ambiance as we enjoyed peach tea.
The Skylarks presented Just a Sister Away and we enjoyed a walk down memory lane remembering past times with our sisters or a best friend as we heard songs such as "Sisters", "Dearie", "Side By Side", and "You May Not Be An Angel But I'll String Along With You."
Guests were introduced and the committee headed by Jackie Smith, Dolores Humphrey, Rosann Hooks, Sara Nan Grubb and Mary Jean Pawley were congratulated for a most outstanding HGA party.
There are so many parties in December that it was decided to have our holiday party in November.
Our First-Vice President, Jackie Smith announced that our next party will be a fashion show gala to be held at the newly redecorated Lakeside Country Club on November 14, 2000. Draper and Damons in Town and Country Village will be doing the show. They have a wonderful selection of top labels and carry sizes from 4 to 18 in womens, misses, and petites. Our members always look so good on the runway and there will be something for everyone of beautiful wearable clothes to carry us through vacations and holiday parties. Guests are welcome!
We welcome back Loretta Castano, Mrs. Kasmar (Joyce) Kubic, Mrs. Paul (Tina) Hoffman, Mrs. Rufus (Bede) LeBlanc, and Mrs. Fred (Janet) Tietz. We shall miss Mrs. Keith (Hjordis) Hawkins, Mary Seewald, Nancy Cochrum, Jean Stern, and Mrs. Frank (LaVerne) Welborn. They have moved to other states. Keep in touch.
We were very proud and pleased on June 17th , 2000 to have Edie Frick, our immediate Past-President, receive on our behalf The HGS Golden Service Award for 50 years of service to HGS. Also we congratulate Jean Cooley on receiving The HGS/HGA Distinguished Service Award for 48 years of outstanding service.
We are still congratulating outgoing President Edie Frick, her board and committees, for a most delightful, fun year of activities. We appreciate all your dedication and hard work! It takes a lot of effort to keep an organization going for (can you believe) 50 years. We also appreciate our founding members for a wonderful organization. Thank you again! As you know, we help the HGS in the office at various times when there is a need such as logging in membership dues and also providing table decorations for guest night. If you have time to work at the HGS office or if table decorations are your thing, volunteer to help. I worked in the HGS office in July logging in dues. It was fun with Joan Henshaw and Annette Mather providing coffee, soft drinks, candy and cookies.
Thanks to our volunteers Myrtis Trowbridge, Jackie Smith, Lennie Edwards, Pat Hefner, Margaret Jones, Helen Thomas, and Betty Frost. A special thanks go to Harry Christian, John Thomas, Charles Trowbridge and Jack Frost for helping in the office. If you and/or your husband would like to volunteer to work, let me know.
There is a dues break for retired HGS members who are 65 or older and have been a member of the Society for 10 consecutive years. The dues are $10.00. You must ask for the lower dues in writing.
Our first program will be September 29, 2000. We encourage the spouse of an active HGS member to join us for these activities. Dues are $15.00 a year and membership forms may be obtained here or from our membership chairman, Karen Allen. Her phone number is 281-343-5150. We welcome you.
Our first program of the year will be held at River Oaks Country Club, 1600 River Oaks Boulevard, on Friday, September 29, 2000. We will be entertained by The Skylarks, who will present "Just a Sister Away", a walk down memory lane containing special moments and songs about sisterhood and friends. So ask a friend to join you for a special program, luncheon and beautiful place to meet.
Our other programs are:
This has been a memorable year as the HGA celebrated its 50th anniversary of service and friendship. I am indebted to the executive board, the committees, and entire HGA membership for their hard work and support at all the events. It's been a pleasure and an honor for me to serve with these talented ladies. We will culminate our “walk down memory lane” at the luncheon/business meeting in May by awarding 50-year membership certificates to 15 charter members who are still active members.
Working with the current HGS board and committees has been a rewarding experience. We appreciate the interest and enthusiasm of HGS president Charles Sternbach, who attended several of our special events. We thank director Sharie Sartain for coordinating HGS/HGA activities and membership chairman Paul Babcock for assisting in our efforts to increase our membership through joint mail-outs. “Thank you” to Kara Bennett, Bulletin editor, who worked with HGA liaison Jeanette Coon to provide space for our news as well as for membership applications.
We are pleased to report that HGA volunteers helped at the HGS office when needed and logged 79 hours this year. We stand ready to assist when HGS welcomes the GCAGS 50th anniversary convention to Houston October 25-27, 2000.
Remember to encourage your spouse to renew her membership for 2000-01. We look forward to another successful year when president Lois Matuszak and her executive board take us into a fun-filled millennium.
The second event of our golden anniversary year was our Christmas party held on December 8, 1999 at the Sugar Creek Country Club. The club was beautifully decorated for the yuletide season. The HGA members enjoyed a scrumptious lunch preceded by entertainment from the group, “My Friends and I”. The party was a joyous and merry occasion and its clear success was due to the diligent work of the party committee co-chaired by Norma Jean Bacho and Shirley Gordon.
The first HGA party of year 2000 was the 50th anniversary tea at the St. Regis, Houston, held on Thursday, February 10. The party honored charter members and past presidents. A longstemmed red rose was presented to each charter member and/or past president in attendance. The party also afforded much time for visiting and perusing scrapbooks from the past four decades. The committee responsible for making the party a memorable occasion was co-chaired by Grace Colle and Suzanne Howell. HGA's very successful game day was held on Monday, March 13 at the Junior League. Daisy Wood served as chairwoman of this popular event. Our final event of the year is the annual Spring luncheon/general meeting, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 10 at River Oaks Country Club. Paula Scudday, well-known entertainer, will be reviewing the book, Angela Lansbury-A Life on Stage and Screen. Co-chairing this event are Jean Moore and Phyllis Winborn.
I’m so busy! I just don’t have time for myself !
Haven’t we all heard that - and haven’t we all said it! In an effort to discover how and why some of our very busiest women become involved in the Houston Geological Auxiliary (HGA), Geophysical Auxiliary of Houston (GAH) and/or GeoWives, I spoke to three people.
First was Jean Richardson, a full-time author of children’s books who lives part time in Houston and part time in Alaska. She is an active member of HGA and GAH. When asked why she joined GAH, she replied, “We were new in Houston in 1967, and didn’t know a lot of people. When I heard there was a new organization being formed for the wives of geophysicists, I thought it might be a good opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy their company. I was certainly right about that. Many of the women I met at that first meeting have been wonderful friends all these years.
“I believe it is essential to make time for activities that enrich your life. For example, in 1990 when I was asked to take the office of president, my first thought was, I don’t have time. I was raising three children, working part time in my husband’s downtown offices, working full time at an educational television station, and writing children’s books in my spare time. My first book had just made the wholesale bestseller list for children, and my publisher had mailed me a calendar with appearances he wanted me to make in the next two years. Thank goodness I reconsidered, because I remember that year fondly as one of the most interesting and rewarding of my entire life.
“What do you get from the Auxiliary?”
“So far I have gotten 33 years of fun and enrichment and support. Most of my dearest friends I have met during Auxiliary projects. At the death of my husband, auxiliary members were a tremendous source of comfort and consolation. I certainly would encourage everyone to join our Houston family.”
I then spoke with Debbie Robinson, who has been active in both the HGA and GeoWives. Debbie is a residential real estate broker with Morgan Personette Properties. She and her husband John have lived in Houston since 1990, when they moved here from Wichita Falls, Texas. Debbie told me that when they moved to Houston, she was very happy to find out there was an auxiliary where she could get to meet others. Since she began working right away, she wasn’t able to go to everything, but as she said, “you have to eat and many of the events were lunches or on the weekend.” Many of the events have also included husbands, and Debbie likes being able to include John. Debbie has especially enjoyed GeoWives because of the smaller number of members. Some of her favorite events have not only been the lunches at different restaurants but also the informative and educational programs offered. She says that over the years she has made many friends, and a good portion of her real estate business has come from association with these groups.
Another busy lady is Pat Burkman. Pat, a social work consultant specializing in geriatrics, not only works full time but manages to do a million other things, including tap and ballroom dancing.
Pat has been active in HGA and GeoWives since the late 50s. When I spoke with her, one of the things that she talked about was how most of us in the oil industry have moved all over the world. Many people feel that we don’t have any roots because of this. Pat feels its just the opposite. “We may not see someone for years, but when we do see them, we just pick up where we left off. Oil organizations and auxiliaries exist world-wide, and this is where we have our roots. You don’t get this in other industries. Maybe its because we need each other. When we are constantly moving, we become each other’s family.” Pat feels strongly that the auxiliaries are important for our husbands, as well as ourselves. She talked to me about how we share with each other and how, by participating in the various activities, we are challenged and stimulated and how we develop self expression.
“Where else do you get the opportunity to be in a play, dance or sing in a show, or show slides of your travels! You are among friends who care about you. We support and encourage each other.”
So, ladies, come and join us. We’re all busy, but come when you can and share in the unity that we all feel in this exciting industry! For more information or information on membership, please call Jeanette Coon at 713-467-3988.
A long-stemmed rose was presented to each of the 12 charter members and 23 past presidents who attended. Several of the honorees were both charter members as well as past presidents. Charles Sternbach, current HGS president, was a special guest at the party, as were Tom and Virginia Barber from Georgetown. Virginia served as president in 1968-69. Edna Pearl Smith, a charter member and 1960-61 president, joined us from her home in Bryan.
They were greeted at the entrance to the Colonade Room by Edie Frick, president, Millie Tonn, 1st vice-president, and Grace Colle and Suzanne Howell, co-chairs of the party and also past presidents.
Harpist Terese Weber played beautiful background music, which set the mood perfectly for a wonderful tea party. The banquet table was filled with an array of dainty tea sandwiches, scones with strawberries and cream, and tea pastries. A choice of three teas was served graciously by an attentive wait staff. An arrangement of red tulips adorned the center of the table. Scrapbooks from the sixties through the nineties were on display.
Assisting Grace and Suzanne with the party arrangements were: Karen Allen, Theresa Barker, Sally Berner, Edie Bishop, Charlie Cantrell, Mildred Davis, June Farren, Mary Folk, Fran Hennington, J.J. Johnson, Sylvia Morris, Val Ovalline, Nancy Remick, Belen Schall, Nelda Sims, Alene Williams and Marian Wood. Special thanks to Sylvia Morris for taking reservations, and to Gwinn Lewis for printing the names for name tags for our honorees.

50th Anniversary celebration is a success
1999-2000 promises to be an exciting year for everyone and especially for the Houston Geological Auxiliary and GeoWives. A variety of new and wonderful events and activities have been planned to commemorate our organization's 50th anniversary and also to herald in the new millennium. We hope you will join in the fun and excitement, and as always, we hope you will also invite your husband/spouse and friends to join our festivities.
We took a walk down memory lane in September with "A Sentimental Journey," a supper tea dance at the Houstonian Hotel reminiscing 50 years of music and dance.
We remembered the 50s with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog." Susan Klaveness and her group from The Houston Swing Dance Society danced to Bill Haley and his Comets‚ "Rock around the clock." John Pickering brought back our memories of Buddy Holly with a medley of songs.
In the 60s we remembered Kennedy–and Camelot. Jack Frost sang for us. Neil Armstrong is the first American to walk on the moon. Remember Michael Jackson and "The Moon Walk." Sam Arvidson brought this to life. And who could forget Chubby Checker and "The Twist."
Pat Burkman tapped across the stage to "A Chorus Line." Disco was big in the 70s also, and we saw dancing that few of us can do but we all enjoy watching. Thank you Sam Arvidson and Mona Brandt. Later we all joined in to sing "Y.M.C.A."
Time marches on and we have the return of Latin music. We were entertained with the rhumba and chacha by Michael Schedler and Yvonne Kubicek. The California Raisins appeared to "I heard it through the grapevine."
George, with Music By George, played show tunes from the 90s and ended with the Anniversary Waltz, as our cake was rolled in and the candles blown out.
We truly had a walk down memory lane. Thanks to all our entertainers. Michael Schedler and Sam Arvidson teach dance lessons at The Dance Place for anyone who would like to give it a try.
Put Wednesday, December 8th on your calendar now! There will be a holiday luncheon at the Sugar Creek Country Club, and "My Friends and I" will be performing their holiday show "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." You won't want to miss this!
The GeoWives held their September social in the home of Ann McFarlan. Ann's brother, H. Leighton Steward, gave the program based on the best-seller book Sugar Busters, which he wrote in collaboration with three medical doctors. He indicated that research is now finding that sugar intake is the real culprit of many health problems such as obesity, blood sugar imbalances, and heart disease to name a few. The GeoWives found his presentation very interesting and informative and enjoyed their healthful "sugar buster" lunch afterward. The new yearbooks were distributed to those members who attended.
October 20th will find GeoWives carpooling downtown for a tour, starting with the new City Hall Visitors Center. After the tour, the group will enjoy lunch at the Doubletree Hotel.
As we all reflect on the past 50 years, we can remember some wonderful times—and we have so many more to look forward to!
When I look back on this fast-passing year, glorious memories flood my mind of the many, many good times we've all enjoyed. It has been a year of growth for us all, and one filled with fun and happiness.
The year went smoothly. We still have another party to look forward to at the May Luncheon Style Show under the guidance of Jean Moore and Jan Stevenson. The show features Gayle's Just Pretty Clothes, using our models, at the Houston Racquet Club. Make your reservations and plan to attend this great and exciting party!
The HGA Annual Meeting, the last party event, brings the installation of the new officers and the end of my reign as HGA President. I want to express my thanks to our members who worked so hard to make my year a really great one. I want everyone to know that you have succeeded beyond my wildest hopes. I specifically want to thank Audrey Tompkins, first vice president, and her committee members who successfully coordinated the wonderful parties; Carlita Laurent, second vice president, who handled the membership problems in beautiful fashion; Mary Kae Dingler, third vice president, who successfully connected us with the HGS Bulletin; Loretta Castano, secretary, for taking our board meeting notes and keeping us straight on just what did and did not happen in our meetings; Ann McFarlan, treasurer, who handled all the money and worked out the many problems a huge group has in counting money; Lydia Hubbell, historian-photographer (and her husband, Bob), for taking so many, many pictures and arranging them in a book for my later pleasure and to help bring back all the great memories this year has produced; and all of our directors: Royce Woodard, Sara Nan Grubb, Joy Payne, and Marian Rush for assisting our Board in every capacity.
I emphasize again that I personally thank all of our members for their support and participation in all our meetings and for giving me the opportunity to serve them as their President for the year 1998–99. It has been such great fun! Thanks again!

2000. . . it's almost here and as your 3rd vice president of the Houston Geological Auxiliary it is time to announce the members of the 1999-2000 Nominating Committee: Chairwoman Linnie Edwards, Suzy Allen, Jeanne Cooley, Daisy Wood, Lois Matuszak, HGA President Naomi Watson, and President-elect Edie Frick. They will meet on March 16 to nominate the new HGA Board. The Nominating Committee urges those nominated to accept their Honorary Board Position and lead us into the new millennium.
As your 3rd Vice president (1998-1999), I have enjoyed meeting more members and attending many special events and parties. I wish to thank you for the opportunity to serve on the Board, especially with our President Naomi Watson whose diplomacy and leadership of "the (1998-1999) decision" gave "status quo" to the Geo-Wives.

What a fantastic February Caribbean Cruise Party! It was a group of heavy revelers who made their way "off" that ship! Everyone had such a great out-of-this-world good time "cruising the islands" and sampling the food at the various "restaurants"! We can't forget to mention the fun everyone had trying their luck at black jack, roulette, or the bingo game. For this wonderful party, we extend our "thank you" to the chairwomen for this party: Pat Burkman and Jan Stevenson. Their committee consisted of E. Mercedes Benz, Beverly Cullins, J.J. Johnson, Myrtis Trowbridge, Lois Matuszak, Doris McKinlay, Jeannette Coon, Norma Roady, Janet Tietz, Hjordis Hawkins, Dene Grove, Marie Hunt, and Audrey Tompkins. And of course, we have to thank Daisy Wood, who lent her magical organizational talents to help make this party one of the year's very best. During the Floor Show and Variety Program we were entertained by our own talented members (Dolores Humphrey, Jim Wood, Pat Shannon, Bill Poyner, Wanda and Dare Keelan, Pat Burkman, Jack and Betty Frost, John Pickering, and Jim and Daisy Wood) cast together by Jeannette Coon. Our entertainers deserve a great big round of applause.
The HGA is always ready to welcome new members into our group. Come join us at some of our events if you would like to have a really great time!

1999 Upcoming Events
I saw Santa watching our Christmas program at The Great Caruso! Yes, he and a whole lot of members and guests were happy to attend. In fact, on November 8 with 30 days yet to go, half of the seats were sold! How does the saying go? "Nothin'says lovin'as something from the oven!" Well nothing puts one in the Christmas mood like two hours of fantastically great Christmas singing. Those thrilling voices truly carried us out on a sleigh, and across the snowy land to a wonderful dreamy Christmas. There surely could not have been even one person who, during that program, didn't succumb to the Christmas spirit. And, because The Great Caruso had beautiful and elaborate Christmas decorations everywhere, there wasn't too much more for our own decorating committee to work on. We extend our grateful thanks for all their accomplishments to the Chairwoman, Jeanne Cooley, and her hard working committee which consisted of. Elinor Macmillan, Janice Haye, Hjordis Hawkins, Carol Vacca, Doris McKinlay, June Otell, Jeanette Coon, Lois Matuszak, Marian Rush, Marie Hunt, and Beverly Van Siclen. Lois Matuszak received the reservations and Gwinn Lewis printed the names for the name tags which the committee decorated. Naomi Watson made the invitation.
During the last HGA Board meeting, the subject was discussed and OKed to give a beautifully etched wall plaque to Daisy Wood to commemorate her tremendously well-done job on the September play, Social Security. Daisy was very pleased.
Get ready! Here comes a real blow-out of a February party! The Caribbean Cruise Party at Lakeside Country Club. The date is Friday, February 19. Everyone really seemed to enjoy this party when it was given in 1997, but most of the women who commented on it said their husbands really loved the party. There is so much going on during this party that everyone has a wonderful time. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. with black jack and roulette going on in one room and a bingo game in another until 8:30 p.m. Or, you can just sit and socialize or watch people doing these things, or go have your photo taken. A buffet dinner will be served from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and it will be the same Caribbean menu that was so delicious last time. Then from 9:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. we will have a Floor Show & Variety Program put on by our own members. And from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
There will be dancing. This party covers all your desires and we would love to have everyone come join us. Members: $30.00 and Guests: $32-00. Please make checks out to HGA and RSVP by February 12 to Lois Matuszak at 1503 Misty Bend, Katy, TX 77494. The chairwomen for this party are Pat Burkman and Marie Hunt and their committee consists of-. E. Mercedes Benz, Beverly Cullins, J.J. Johnson, Myrtis Trowbridge, Lois Matuszak, Doris McKinlay, Jeanette Coon, Norma Roady, Jan Stevenson, Janet Tietz, Hjordis Hawkins, Dene Grove and Audrey Tompkins. But the fortunate part is that Daisy Wood, whose special organizational talents made the 1997 party a real out-of- this-world event, is helping again with this one! And you know (or perhaps, you should know) that guarantees a tremendously exciting party! On page 40 in this issue there is an invitation to this couples party. If you have other questions, please call Naomi Watson at 713-464-7570.

Wow! Curtain call! Curtain call! What an evening! What a success!
If you didn't attend any of the performances of Social Security, you missed a truly exciting event which played to an almost sold-out audience. Everyone had such a great time! The Kaplan Theatre at the Jewish Community Center offers a wonderful array of services for all kinds of performances. There was also a large attendance Thursday, September 3, for the Luncheon and Matinee. In our group we have some very talented actors and actresses. Our thanks again goes to Daisy Wood for all her talents in putting on this event and her hard-working HGA committee which included: Virginia Angelos, Sue Carlile, Jeanette Coon, Janice Haye, Norma Gordon, Mary Jean Pawley, Joy Payne, Millie Tonn, Naomi Watson, and Mikki Wunderle. The actors and actresses were: Martha Raymond, Dolores Humphrey, Lois Matuszak, Dave Matuszak, Pat Shannon and Ted Pfister. The director, Mike Evans, was masterful in his direction of the actors and actresses to emphasize all the funny lines and the result was a very funny play. He is very talented.
The next great party will be our Tuesday, December 8, 11:30 a.m. Christmas Luncheon at the Great Caruso where the staff will present Christmas on Broadway. So many people enjoyed this program last year that we decided to repeat it again this year. The Great Caruso was a packed house last year and will be again this year, so get your reservations in early. The Great Caruso is located at 10001 Westheimer #2090 in the Carillon Shopping Center. Cost for this event will be members: $23.00, guests: $25.00. The committee has everything going along at top speed to prepare for this anticipated crowd-pleaser of a program. The committee members are Jeanette Coon, Janice Haye, Hjordis Hawkins, Elinor Macmillian, Lois Matuszak, Marie Hunt, June Otell, Joy Payne, Marian Rush, Carol Vacca, and Beverly Van Siclen. Receiving the reservations will be Lois Matuszak.

We are very proud of the way Geo-Wives have supported HGA this year.
Update on the trip to Beaumont: We arrived at 8:15 a.m. at the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church parking lot to be
greeted by Martha Lou Broussard, who served us orange juice and pastries. This was no small fete as there were 31
of us going on the outing. Martha Lou had instruction sheets made out for each driver, a schedule of events, and
phamphlets.
Our first stop was The Energy Museum, which is near downtown Beaumont in a new two-story building with ample
free parking. Upon entering you are met with numerous
exhibits including rocks, fossils, and a salt-water aquarium complete with a live reefal complex. There are dozens of
exhibits showing photographs and replicas of the early boom town days near Spindletop depicting the history and birth
of the oil ?
industry and tracing its history of exploration, production, refining, and marketing. Spindletop was the spawning ground
of many companies including Mobil, Texaco, Gulf, and Sun. The second floor houses additional exhibits including a
life-sized replica of the derrick floor of the Lucas No. 1, the discovery Spindletop well. Talking life-size replicas of
Patillo Higgins and Captain Anthony Lucas standing on the derrick floor, give their rendition of their struggle and the
events leading up to the 1901 discovery of the 100,000 barrels per day well. Later, in the mid- 1920s, a second boom
took place when flank production was found. Messrs. Yaunt and Lee were big developers of this flank production
leading to the Yaunt Lee Oil Company (later bought out by Stanolind, now BP Amoco). Spindletop is a tribute to
American creativity where risk takers were justly rewarded and, in turn, benefitted the town of Beaumont, the state of
Texas, and the entire United States.
After a delicious lunch at The Green Beanery, we next visited the McFadden-Ward House, one of five Gulf Coast
houses built by architect Henry Conrad Mauer between 1905 and 1910. Occupying an entire city block, the house with
its large porches, porte cochere, and two-story white Ionic columns is one of the few remaining Beaux Arts Colonial
houses in the United States. The house and gardens are framed by Royal Palm trees. The 12,000-square-foot house is
faithfully maintained with original porcelains, 3500 pieces of sterling silver, glassware, crystal chandeliers, stained
and leaded glass windows, oriental rugs, and many works of art. The daughter of the McFaddens, Mammie, was
married to Carrol E. Ward in 1919 and occupied the house until her death in 1982. She established the Mammie
McFadden Ward Heritage Foundation to ensure that the house would be richly restored and maintained for future
generations to enjoy.
Our last stop was the Spindletop/Gladys City Boom Town Museum, which was built to commemorate the history of the
Spindletop discovery. Fifteen buildings replicate actual businesses in operation at the time of the boom, including the
Broussard Blacksmith Shop. Located adjacent to the museum is the Lucas Granite Monument, a 50-foot Texas granite
obelisk erected in 1941. Our return to Houston included a drive over the hill overlying the Spindletop Dome.
Our next meeting on April 27 will be a program on archeology of the Middle East. We will dine at Dimassi's Middle
Eastern Restaurant on Richmond. We will be honored to have Dr. Bader from The University of Saint Thomas as our
speaker. Sandra Pezzetta is our hostess and this will be a wonderful program. Invite guests and husbands to
join us.
Update on our Argentine program: We arrived at the beautiful home of Sholeh Huber. There were flowers and fruits
everywhere. The committee headed by Dolores Humphrey was busily putting finishing touches on the Argentine fare.
The background music provided by Marianne de Korvin consisted of well known Argentine tangos. Marianne was born
and raised in Buenos Aires and speaks seven languages. Did you know the national flower of Argentina is the ceibo?
Lilia Cerana prepared an Argentine exhibit, which contained the national flower and scenes from Buenos Aires and other
beautiful tourist spots. She also had a girl's national costume for us to see. The dress was blue and had a white apron with
a hand painted ceibo by Lilia Cerana. Lilia Cerana and Ana Maria Manzolillo displayed their paintings depicting nature and
still life scenes of Argentina. Lilia, who is from the Northern Province, is preparing for an exhibition of her paintings.
Ana Maria, who is from the Southern Province, is an accomplished artist and has won many awards for her paintings.
I welcomed the members and guests with, "Bienvenidos a todos" and thanked Sholeh Huber for opening her lovely home
for the program. Then Lucy Garate Keeper, who was wearing an authentic gaucho costume including a silver dagger
owned by her grandfather, read, in Spanish, selected verses from the famous Argentine classic work of Martin Fierro.
Translations in English were distributed among the audience. Luisa Santesteban, who is a professor of Spanish selections
of for continuing education at Rice University, read in Spanish the contemporary works of Jorge Luis Borges. Dolores
Humphrey read the English translation and a plagiarized version by some obscure author. The Borges Works were very
moving as they expressed the importance of savoring each precious moment of life. Wanda and Dare Keelan danced the
Tango flawlessly, and after much applause did a Cha-Cha encore to the tune of Guantanamera. Then it was time to eat!
What a wonderful lunch. We had "palta" (avocados) with "salsa golf"(mayonnaise, catsup and cognac). We had "pastel (pie)
de papas (potatoes)" which was similar to shepherds pie but the Argentine version had raisins and olives in it. It was
expertly prepared by Marianne de Korvin. We had mixed green salad and rolls prepared by Chiche Casarsa. Lilia Cerana
made the flan and Sholeh Huber supplied rum and chocolate cakes. Marianne ordered meringues with chocolate centers
and on the side was "dulce de leche" to top the meringues. Red wine from the Province of Mendoza was served and now
we know why it is so famous.
Beaumont here we come! Martha Lou Broussard, the first woman vice president of AAPG in 82 years, will lead
us on an expedition Wednesday, March 17, 1999. Our first stop is the Texas Energy Museum in downtown
Beaumont where we will listen to the historical characters share their adventures at the great Spindletop gusher
of 1901. Our lunch will be at the Green Beanery, a remodeled early-1900s house. Then on to a tour of the
McFadden-Ward home, which was built in 1906 from the wealth generated by the Spindletop discovery.
Our last stop will be at the Spindletop/Gladys City Boomtown Museum. This is an exceptional trip that you won't
want to miss.
Update on our tour of Forbidden Gardens in Katy: Linnie Edwards led the caravan, which included Mary Jane
Berryman, Jean Richardson, Jean Moore, Helyn Romberg, Hjordis Hawkins, H.G.A. President Naomi Watson,
Daisy Wood, our hostess, and her guests Rae Calvert and Helen Formy. They were met at the Gardens by Jackie
Smith, our membership chairwoman, Rosanne Hooks, our courtesy chairwoman, Ann McFarlan, Pat Burkman,
Dene Grove, Janet Godfrey, and Sandra Pezzetta. Also attending were courtesy chairwoman Betty and Harry
Christian, Lydia and Bob Hubbell, Geo-Wives President Lois and David Matuszak, and Marilyn and
Chuck Conley. Miho Yamamoto came with her precious son.
We gathered in the pavilion and began our tour of the 40- acre museum serenaded by sounds of a Chinese zither.
The museum is a historical view of the dynasty of the First Emperor of China named Qin (pronounced Chin).
We saw life-size models of his personal guards, each with a different face, and also a 6,000-piece terracotta model
of his army in formation. It was said that his methods of warfare were so successful that his battle strategy was
studied and used by General Patton. Emperor Qin gave China its name, ordered the Great Wall to be built, and used
chrome in the making of weapons (although the modern world would not discover chrome until centuries later).
Qin also set up China's Imperial system of dynasties, which lasted over 2,200 years. We then toured the miniature
replica of the Forbidden City, which was founded 3,000 years ago as
a shield against barbarian tribes. We saw his and hers palaces, and learned that some of Qin's 3000 concubines
spoke 14 languages. Our tour was to last an hour but the group was so fascinated by the museum we stayed another
20 minutes to see and hear more. We were late to lunch at Hunan on Post Oak, where Dolores Humphrey,
Martha Lou Broussard, Ann Rogers, and Doris and Phil McKinlay were patiently waiting. We had a wonderful
lunch and caught up on the news. See you at the March meeting!
Happy New Year!
It isn't too late to make reservations for January 21, to tour
forbidden Gardens and have lunch at Hunan Oaks. Have you
wondered what Feng Shui is all about? Come to the luncheon
and find out! Make reservations with I,innie Edwards. Our
hostess for this program is Daisy Wood.
On February 18, we will be entertained at the beautiful
home of Sholch Huber. Her home is like a Persian palace.
Hostesses Dolores Humphrey and Wanda Keelan will have an
exciting program, "Argentina, Mi Buenos Aires Querido," with
surprise entertainment. We will dine on Argentine fare.
The play reading group met at the home of Linnic Edwards
and read The Hollow by Agatha Christie. Flowers and a special
book, which chronicled the happenings of the play Social
Security, were presented to Daisy Wood in appreciation of producing
the play. The group made a costume party of the play
reading. Daisy and Jim Wood, looking like they had just come
from a performance of Cats came as-you guessed it-cats! John
Pezzetta was an English bobby and Sandra Pezzetta came as a
Scottish dancer ready to dance the sword dance. Dolores
Humphrey made a fetching Tina Turner. Elliott Powers looked
very distinguished as an ambassador. Can you believe Linnie
Edwards was a pumpkin? Chuck Edwards came undisguised and
wanted everyone to know that pumpkin was his! David
Matuszak, alias Joe DiMaggio, brought Lois Matuszak, alias
Marilyn Monroe. Martha Raymond, Marie Antoinette, brought
cake. Lydia and Bob Hubbell brought fresh-baked homemade
bread. The group also dined on tropical fruit salad, chicken salad
sandwiches, deviled eggs, pasta salad, rice sausage casserole, macaroons
and macadamia white chocolate cookies.
Raveneaux Country Club Fashion Show Update:
Jean Moore, looking elegant as always, and Sue Bullock, wearing
an ensemble of seafoam green and a gold Egyptian cartouche,
were the perfect hostesses. The latest fashions from Scruples were
forest green, deep plum, animal print, classic black, and vibrant
gold. Some had touches of sparkling beads, sequins, or feathers.
The fabrics were cashmere, metallic knit, velvet, leather, brocade,
and even elegant fabric that would stretch! The purses were a
nice surprise. They were in shapes of an elephant, gold Santa,
traditional Santa, and even a Christmas tree. They were roomy
enough to carry all essentials easily. There were a variety of styles
from casual to very elegant. Model Betty Frost wore a brocade-topped
jumpsuit that had a split black overskirt. Ann McFarlan
modeled a lovely plum velvet evening dress. Jan Stevenson modeled
a cool mint cashmere sweater and slacks. She also modeled a
blue suit that really looked smashing with her blonde hair. Terry
Pooser wore a red wool Texas western jacket and slacks and also
modeled a long black lace evening gown. Dolores Humphrey
wore an exquisite long gold metallic evening dress accented with
gold metallic fringe. Looking very becoming, Margaret Jones
wore a most unusual metallic brown suit which you would never
guess was made from the latest in elegant stretch fabric. Betty
Christian, our courtesy chairman, brought her sister, Diana
Fontana. Also attending were Marilyn Conley, Linnie Edwards,
Wanda Keelan, Sholeh Huber, Adrian Lewis, Doris McKinlay,
Mary Jean Pawley, Sandra Pezzetta, Barbara Stephens, Ann
Pickle, Jennifer Biancardi, and HGA President Naomi Watson.
Lois Matuszak, Geo-Wives President and Skylark, brought as her
guest "Skylark" originator, Paula Scudday.
Nostalgia Meeting: A new member, Laura Smith, who has an art degree from UT, brought a
basket that had belonged to her Grandmother and told us how to restore baskets. She had
spray painted her Grandmother's basket white and covered the handle with soft material
embellished with pearls and roses. The basket held rice bags for her daughter's wedding.
She also showed us how to make wedding candles, name tags, and a special "Southern Belle"
evening bags for your daughter's prom. Laura is a costume designer and use to have a
craft business.
Zoe Vest brought hand painted tiles, magnets, and frames that she had made for a church
fund raiser. Zoe's Greek noodles were wonderful. Treva Maxwell, one of our newest members,
brought one of her beautiful handmade quilts. Sandra Pezzetta, yearbook chairman, who has
a degree in nursing and is also an accomplished artist, brought some exquisite hand
knitted sweaters and an afghan. Naomi Watson, HGA President, brought a lacy crocheted
tablecloth and showed us her fifty-foot long genealogy form which, of course, was on well
log paper! What else would you expect from a geologist's wife? Great idea! Naomi also
publishes a 145-member family newsletter, and she also sews and redesigns clothes. Betty
Christian, our courtesy chairman and a member of the Daughters of The Republic of Texas,
told of her interest in genealogy. Linnie Edwards, our treasurer, had perfume bottles and
thimbles from her travels around the world. We especially liked her Waterford Crystal
perfume bottle, her hinged Limoges thimble, and the thimble that belonged to her
grandmother. Jackie Smith, our membership chairman, brought her collection of Shirley
Temple pictures. Hostesses Jan Stevenson and Dene Grove were busy spoiling the group by
waiting on us. Jan brought a wonderful beef brisket with mango sauce and Dene Grove
brought a raw broccoli and grape salad. Myrtis Trowbridge and Theresa Barker won the
Grandmother report. Myrtis has 18 grandchildren and Theresa has 17. Nancy Poynor was
babysitting and unable to attend.
Lydia Hubbell received her education from the Ursula Academy. She has adopted two
children, and has made special garments for them that can be passed down to future
generations. Lydia and Jackie Smith are also very active in the Republican Women.
J.J. Johnson, who attended nursing school in Beaumont, is interested in antiques,
gardening, and music. She is a patron of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, is a folk
singer, and sings in the Memorial Drive Methodist church choir. Mae Barclay passed
around a gold and diamond ring she had made. Mae is an artist, poet and goldsmith.
She has contributed her talents to HGA often. Dolores Humphrey read her very moving
poem about her brother. Dolores always stirs our hearts with her readings.
Alice Cook enjoyed a cruise with her mother on the Crystal Symphony to London, Spain,
and Portugal. Terry Pooser cruised the Danube and recently adopted two precious puppies
from the CAPA. Rosemary Turner also has two dogs that are her pride and joy. Mildred
Davis said Tropical Storm Frances damaged her bay home more than Hurricane Alicia did
in 1983. On a happier note, she had a marvelous time in Vail and enjoyed a cruise to
Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. Debbie Robinson couldn't attend because she was helping
John when his office flooded from the storm. Roseann Hooks loved her cruise to Alaska
on the Celebrity Cruise Line. Mary Jean Pawley, a member of Panhellenic, is on the
Committee to award scholarships to girls in Texas colleges. She is in AAUW and helps
with EYH, which is math and science oriented. Mary Jean grew up in Santa Fe and loves
Taos, Indian art, and jewelry. Beryl McCleary exhibited two rare kilm rugs and told us
the story of how she obtained them in Bulgaria and Turkey. Lois Matuszak collects dolls
and brought wooden political, traditional, and fancy wooden dolls from Malta. She
brought a picture of her 3rd place international, 1st place regional, Houston Horizon
140 member ladies barbershop chorus that will be competing for honors in Nashville in
November. Mary Kae Dingler, our phone committee chairman, asked us to donate unmatched
or old socks to Child Advocates so the children can make puppets from them. What a
worthy cause!
Our December 18 evening meeting will be held at the home of Ted and Ann
McFarlan. Special entertainment will be presented by "The Skylarks." Mark your calendar,
pick out your favorite Christmas dish you would like to bring, get your favorite
holiday dress ready, and bring your husband or a friend to our special Christmas
celebration Friday, December 18. See you there!
